A nude mod is a modification to a video game which removes the clothing from some or all of the characters therein. The reasons for nudity vary, such as censorship, realism, and eroticism. Mods that add nudity to computer and video games have been widely available on the internet since at least 1997. Early examples include nude patches for The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1997), Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1996) and Maqiupai (1998). More well known are mods for "The Sims" (e.g., "Sims 2: Nude and Sexy"), "EverQuest", and Riven: The Sequel to Myst. The idea originated when the original team was putting together the character models, however the NPC NPC models were not yet in place. It was found to be in violation of BioWare's copyright, and thus has been taken down from the official website. Critics have noted that "The Sims", "EverQuest", and "World of Warcraft" are filled with nude mods, but that most players never know about them. Naked mods for online games are often done by fans, usually without permission or knowledge of developers or publishers. The majority of these mods are designed to allow players to wear clothing normally hidden beneath an armor set. Some of the most popular nude mods for massively multiplayer online games, such as World of Warcraft and Eve Online, are generally only used by a small minority of players. In other cases, players make use of glitches in the game's software to reveal clothing normally hidden underneath armor sets. In "World of Warcraft", for example, it was discovered that players could make their entire character appear naked by using a glitch to exploit a bug in the game that made clothing invisible.
